“THAILAND’S WORLD CHAMPION WALKERS” WET SEASON BREAK IN CHIANG MAI

by Dennis on October 5, 2008

Friday 11th September to Monday 2nd November, 1998. We arrived in Chiang Mai by bus at 14.00 hrs and walked from the Arcade bus station to Souvenir Guest House, next to Anusarn Market and we received a warm welcome from Ron & Sandra, who are our great new friends. On 14th September, William went to Bangkok and Nakhon Sri Thammarat for 10 days to see his parents and friends. I contacted BBDO in Bangkok, but Khun Jean had left the company and I was referred to Khun Dan who was incompetent. The BBDO and Adidas sponsorship trail died. Andrew, in Hat Yai, informed me that our funds were getting low, but we would be OK when our $25,000 annual contract for internet consultancy work for 1999 was renewed by “Telia” in Sweden, on 1st December, 1998. We agreed to cut our costs and go on war-time rations.

During our 6 weeks in Chiang Mai at Souvenir Guest House, we met many very nice and interesting people. I tried to meet the leading Alien people in the community as the ambassador for “Walking For Thailand” & we met American Alien resident Margaret and her Thai husband Gozon, who have been publishing the excellent ”Welcome to Chiangmai & Chiangrai” magazine since 1986:

We also met English Alien John Shaw and his charming daughter Pim.  John invited us to his home in the rural area of the canal road and we met many of his Alien friends, who were enjoying their ’Beer Singha and Johnnie Walker’. I played croquet on the lawn in mid October, which is the only time I have played it in Amazing Thailand! John was Honorary British Consul in Chiang Mai in 1978. They publish the excellent “Chiang Mai News’ magazine monthly:

William was helping Gomase at “Good Morning Chiang Mai” magazine sell advertising and also helping Ron and Sandra at the guest house and we really got to know Chiang Mai very well. I walked around the whole city, a section at a time, including a walk around the superhighway. I really enjoyed the narrow sois in the residential areas, which I had not seen anywhere, during our walk to date. The square moat was spectacular and unique in the world we live in. We met Simon Lever, the British Consul and he agreed to “Wave the Union Flag” on our departure from Thai Immigration at the Burmese border at Mae Sai on Wednesday 4th November at 10.30 hrs, when we will continue our ”Walking For Thailand” for 60 million Thai people.
