Here is a short history of The Royal State Railway of Thailand…

Travelling by Train in Thailand is Cheap, Safe and Enjoyable…It is also a great way to live life with the Thai people… I take the overnight sleeper trains between Bangkok and Chiang Mai and Bangkok and Hat Yai regularly…
The State Railway of Thailand have a good website with a Timetable and Fares listings for all the routes, which I always refer to…

How to Travel by Train in Thailand gives you much more information and photos of the interiors of the trains…

When I take a fan second class sleeper train I always book the upper bunk…The lower bunk is very hot and noisy from the open window and often smelly from the diesel fumes of the locomotive and the odours from the toilet pipe…On air con second class sleeper trains I book the lower bunk which is very comfortable and I can look out of the window… There is a reading light, which usually works as these coaches are only 20 to 30 years old, whereas the fan second class sleeping coaches are…As old or older than me…
These overnight sleeper trains have a restaurant car in the middle of the train which closes at 10 pm…I go in there for some beers and food and often it’s a party atmosphere as the Thais love to party…Any excuse to have fun…Local people bring food and drinks constantly through the train carriages…So you will never be hungry or thirsty…This is the Thai way of life and it is most enjoyable…
My friend Adam in Chiang Mai has an excellent website about Thailand Trains and Railways…
