Monday 20th July, 1998. At 07.30 hrs David Hardcastle took photos of us outside the T.A.T. office with the old metal bridge, which is a Chiang Mai landmark, in the background. We both had new shoes and I gave David my old shoes as a memento that I had bought in Prachuap Khiri Khan. These were my third pair of shoes and they did 1,055 ‘walking kms’, plus extras, say 1,250 kms in total.
We walked through town, then on highway 107 with 4 kms to the open road. We passed a golf course and the provincial offices while walking towards Mae Rim. We tried to stay at “Little England Guest House” in Mae Rim, but the owner was in UK and they only took monthly rentals at 1,000 baht/month. It was a dirty place and in need of repairs. We took local transport to Mae Raem and stayed at “Khanlan Hotel” in 2 rooms at 250 baht each. It was lovely countryside. We went for a walk in the late afternoon and saw an orchid farm, a snake farm, an antiques shop and we had a good meal close by the hotel.

Monday 21st July, 1998. We left early, but ached all over from our 5 day break in Chiang Mai. We had yet, to pass through the “Pain Barrier” - AGAIN! It was a busy road to Mae Taeng and we came to the junction of highway 1095 to Mae Hong Son (215 kms) and Pai (115kms). No energy for walking there today! We continued walking north past this junction and found a superb hotel 1 kms up the road on the RHS. It was a small hotel at the “Traveler Inn” with air-con, hot water and HBO TV at 400 baht/night with very comfortable beds & a great coffee shop:
