Saturday 8th August, 1998. We had a big breakfast of home-made Swiss bread, coffee and eggs and Martin took our photos in the garden of their home:

Today was an important day, being a ‘Primary Goal Achievement Day’ and the realisation of the first part of our ‘Possible Dream’ of walking 9,000 kms through the 76 provinces in Thailand. We were getting close to Mae Sai and more excited by the kilometre. We arrived at 15.30 hrs:

We found ‘King Cobra Guest House’ beside the river, as recommended by David Hardy in Chiang Mai, but the owner Cobra Joe was not there. We walked around the town and had food beside the river at a lovely restaurant. We just sat there rather shell-shocked that we had arrived in Mae Sai and done what we had set out to do, all those months and kilometres away.
Dennis had walked 2,561 kilometres to Mae Sai from Padang Besar in 83 walking days, starting on 11th February, 1998 and William had walked 2,186 kilometres to Mae Sai from Krabi Town in 72 walking days, starting on 5th March, 1998. We don’t believe it has ever been done before in Thailand:

We had arranged for David Hardy from Chiang Mai to visit us in Mae Sai tomorrow 9th August. My goal was to arrive at Mae Sai by my 52nd Birthday on 9th August, 1998. We were one day early. Amazing Thailand:

I was so lucky to meet William on the 1st March, 1998 at Happy Tour on the Riverfront in Krabi Town. On 6th March he joined me “Walking For Thailand” and we walked together, for 60 million Thai people, to Phuket Town on our way to Mae Sai.
Yours truly,
