Here is some information that you won’t find in any Brochure or from a Thai Tour Guide…
It is the local custom in Thailand to take your own bottle of spirits into a bar or restaurant and drink the contents there…Only ordering and paying for the ice and mixers…You will be expected to order some food or snacks whilst you are there…This is the Thai Lifestyle where the bar or restaurant is Thai owned…
Where these places are foreign owned…This practice is often not permitted or they will charge you a corkage fee for bringing your own bottle….Or if you buy a bottle from the foreign owned bar…You can then drink it there…But you will pay more for the bottle in the bar than you will pay in the street…
Look around and see what the other Thai customers are doing…Beside each table there is a drinks trolley…If you see a bottle of spirits with a box and plastic bag then it has been brought in from outside…If you are not sure…Ask so you don’t upset anyone…
You can do the same for a bottle of wine if the place does not sell wine or the variety of wine is limited…Would you get away with this in the west?…Of course not…They would throw you out…
The exception…Every bar sells beer and they expect you to buy the beer from them…That’s OK…It is much cheaper taking your own spirits into a bar and paying only for the ice and mixers…
