ผู้ทรงเป็นแบบอย่างแห่งทูตสันถวไมตรีของประเทศที่แท้จริง

มหากษัตริย์และพระราชวงศ์ผู้ทรงเป็นฑูตสันถวไมตรีที่ยอดเยี่ยม พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงมีส่วนยิ่งกว่าผู้ใดทั้งสิ้นในการเสริมสร้างสัมพันธภาพแห่งมิตรไมตรี ระหว่างประเทศไทยกับสังคมโลกเสมอมามิได้ขาด.
ในฐานะองค์พระประมุขของชาติ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชทรงปฏิบัติพระราชภารกิจสำคัญทั้งปวงอย่างสนพระราชหฤทัย แม้ในรายละเอียดเล็กน้อยเพียงใดก็ตาม ไม่ว่าจะทรงปรากฏพระองค์ ณ งานหรือพิธีวารใด งานนั้นจะมีความหมายเป็นพิเศษขึ้นทันที ทูตานุทูตที่เข้าถวายสาส์นตราตั้งของประเทศและเป็นตัวแทนประเทศในงานพิธีต่าง ๆ ตระหนักดีในเรื่องนี้ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวของไทยนั้นหาใช่เป็นเพียงองค์ประมุขในระบอบประชาธิปไตยเท่านั้น หากทรงเป็นสัญลักษณ์และมิ่งขวัญของประเทศไทยและคนไทยทั้งชาติ
ในระยะต้นรัชสมัย ระหว่างเดือนธันวาคม พุทธศักราช ๒๕๐๒ ถึงเดือนมิถุษายน พุทธศัก ราช ๒๕๐๓ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวและสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ทรงเยือนประเทศต่าง ๆ ในฐานะพระประมุขและเสด็จเยือนอย่างเป็นทางการรวม ๓๑ ครั้ง การเสด็จเยือนครั้งแรกคือที่สาธารณรัฐเวียตนาม ระหว่างวันที่ ๑๘ ถึง ๒๑ ธันวาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๒ ตามมาด้วยการเสด็จเยือนสาธารณรัฐอินโดนีเซีย ดั้งแด่วันที่ ๕ ถึง ๑๖ กุมภาพันธ์ และเสด็จเยือนพม่าระหว่างวันที่ ๒ ถึง ๕ มีนาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๓
หลังจากนั้น ในเดือนมิถุณายน พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๓ พระบาทสมเค็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวและสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถทรงเริ่มการเสด็จเยือนสหรัจอเมรีกาและประเทศยุโรปอีก ๑๓ ประเทศ ซึ่งรวมเวลาถึง ๗ เดือนกับอีก ๔ วัน

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand - A Model Goodwill Ambassador of the Country

For over half a century, the Kingdom of Thailand has had the great fortune to have the best and most effective goodwill ambassador in her great and beloved monarch, as well as members of the royal family. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has done more than anybody to forge cordial relations between Thailand and the world community.
As Head of State, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej executes his official duties with great care, attending to minute details. His presence at functions has always been meaningful. Envoys feel this when they present their credentials to the King or represent their countries at official functions. His Majesty is more than a constitutional monarch; indeed, he is the embodiment of Thailand.
Early in his reign, between December 1959 and June 1967, Thailand’s King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit made 31 state and official visits to foreign countries. The first was to Vietnam from December 18 to 21, 1959, and in the following year to Indonesia and Burma respectively from February 8 to 16 and March 2 to 5.
Thereafter, in June 1960, Their Majesties embarked on an extended state visit to the United States of America and 13 European countries, which lasted seven months and four days.
On the first leg of the royal visit to the United States, the King and Queen spent four days in Hawaii before flying to California to tour Paramount and Desilu Movie Studios in Los Angeles. Their Majesties were portrayed touring Disneyland along with their children, HRH Princess Ubolratana, and HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, accompanied by Mr. Walt Disney. The King and Queen chatted with Bob Hope, Lucille Ball and sat on the set of “G. I. Blues,” flanked by Elvis Presley and Juliette Prowse.
On June 29, 1960, His Majesty addressed the Congress of the United States, saying, in part:
“…Firstly, I have long desired to see and learn more of your country. When I hear of intolerance and oppression in so many parts of the world, I want to know how, in this country, millions of people differing in

“ในประการแรก ข้าพเจ้ามีความปรารถนาอยู่นานแล้วที่จะได้มาเห็นและเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับประเทศของท่านให้มากยิ่งขึ้น เมื่อใดที่ข้าพเจ้าได้ฟังเรื่องความขาดความอดกลั้นยอมรับผู้อื่นและการกดขี่ข่มเหงในที่ต่าง ๆ ในโลก ข้าพเจ้าใคร่จะทราบว่าด้วยเหตุใดประเทศนั้นประชากรเป็นล้าน ๆ ที่แตกต่ากันด้วยเชื้อชาติ ประเพณี และศาสนา จึงสามารถอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างมีเสรีภาพ และกลมกลืนกันได้อย่างมีความสุข คนนับล้านๆ เหล่านี้ แม้จะอยู่กระจัดกระจายกันในพื้นที่กว้างใหญ่ไพศาล กลับสามารถตกลงกันได้ในเรื่องสำคัญ ๆ เกี่ยวกับกิจการของโลกที่ซับซ้อนอย่างยิ่ง หรือกล่าวง่าย ๆ สั้นๆ ก็คือ เขาอดกลั้นยอมรับกันได้อย่างไร
“ประการที่สอง ข้าพเจ้าปรารถนาจะนำคำอวยพรและไมตรีจิตของประชากรของข้าพเจ้ามาให้ท่านด้วยตนเอง แม้ว่าชาวไทยและชาวอเมริกันจะอยู่กันคนละซีกโลก แต่ก็มีสิ่งหนึ่งที่เหมือนกันอยู่ คือความรักเสรีภาพ ที่จริงแล้ว คำว่าไทย หมายถึงความเป็นอิสระ การต้อนรับอย่างเปี่ยมด้วยไมตรีที่เราได้รับในประเทศนี้ทำให้ข้าพเจ้าสามารถนำมิตรภาพไมตรีของท่านกลับไปสู่ประชาชนของข้าพเจ้า มิตรภาพระหว่างรัฐบาลหนึ่งกับอีกรัฐบาลหนึ่งเป็นสิ่งสำคัญ แต่มิตรภาพระหว่างประชาชนของสองประเทศคือสิ่งที่สามารถรับประกันสันติภาพและความก้าวหน้าได้อย่างแท้จริง
“ประการที่สาม ข้าพเจ้ามีความปรารถนาตามปกติวิสัยของมนุษย์ที่จะได้เห็นที่เกิดของข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้าคาดว่าหลายท่านในที่นี้คงเกิดที่เมืองบอสตัน พ่อได้รับการศึกษาที่มหาวิทยาลัยฮาร์วาร์ดเช่นเดียวกับบิดาของข้าพเจ้า และต้องขอรีบแสดงความยินดีต่อผู้ที่มีโชคเป็นพิเศษเหล่านี้ ข้าพเจ้าแน่ใจว่าท่านคงมีจิตใจเหมือนกับข้าพเจ้า เราต่างก็มีความภาคภูมิใจอย่างล้ำลึกในความสำเร็จด้านวิชาการและวัฒนธรรมของนครที่น่าอัศจรรย์แห่งนี้.
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวมีกระแสพระราชดำริเกี่ยวกับความร่วมมือช่วยเหลือของรัฐบาลสหรัจอเมริกาต่อประเทศไทยในครั้งนั้นว่า~
ความช่วยเหลือของสหรัฐอเมริกานั้นก็เพื่อให้ไทยได้บรรลุวัตถุประสงค์ของตนด้วยความพากเพียรพยายามของตนเอง ข้าพเจ้าไม่จำเป็นต้องกล่าวเลยว่าเราเห็นด้วยกับแนวทางนี้อย่างเต็มที่
“ความจริง ในคำสั่งสอนของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีอยู่ข้อหนึ่งว่า ตนแลเป็นที่พึ่งแห่งตน เราซาบชึ้งในความช่วยเหลือของสหรัฐอเมริกา แด่เราก็ตั้งใจว่าวันหนึ่งจะไม่ต้องรับความช่วยเหลืออีกต่อไป
“และก็มาถึงคำถามที่หลายท่านคงสนใจ คือว่า คนไทยเราคิดอย่างไรต่อความร่วมมือช่วยเหลือของสหรัฐอเมริกา ข้าพเจ้าจะพยายามอธิบายตามความเห็นของข้าพเจ้าอย่างรวบรัดที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้
“ในประเทศข้าพเจ้า มีแนวความคิดที่เป็นที่ยอมรับกันอย่างกว้างขวาง นั่นคือพันธะในครอบครัว สมาชิกในครอบครัวโดยทั่วไปจะมีภาระต้องช่วยสงเคราะห์ผู้ที่อยู่ในภาวะต้องการความช่วยเหลือในครอบครัว การให้ความช่วยเหลือนั้นเป็นคุณธรรมในตัวมันเองอยู่แล้ว ผู้ให้ไม่ได้ต้องการฟังผู้รับกล่าวคำสรรเสริญอยู่ทุกวันหรือต้องการได้รับสิ่งใดเป็นการตอบแทน หากผู้รับยังรู้สึกในบุญคุณและผู้รับนั้นก็จะปฏิบัติภาระผูกพันของตน
“ในการให้อย่างไม่ตระหนี่ต่อประเทศอื่นนั้น ในความเป็นแบบไทยของข้าพเจ้าแล้ว สหรัฐอเมริกากำลังนำหลักการพันธะในครอบครัวมาปฏิบัติจริงในวงกว้างออกไป ชาติต่าง ๆ ในโลกกำลังได้เรียนรู้ว่าต่างเป็นสมาชิกของครอบครัวใหญ่ครอบครัวหนึ่ง และมีพันธกรณีต่อกัน ทุกประเทศขึ้นอยู่ต่อกันไม่ทางใดก็ทางหนึ่ง อาจใช้เวลานานที่ประเทศต่าง ๆ จะเรียนรู้บทเรียนนี้ แต่เมื่อได้เรียนรู้จริงจังแล้ว ลู่ทางเเห่งสันติภาพในโลกก็จะสดใส”
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงเตือนความจำของสมาชิกรัฐสภาสหรัฐถึงสัมพันธภาพอันราบรื่นที่ประเทศไทยและสหรัฐอเมริกามีต่อกันนับแต่ระยะเริ่มสถาปนาสหรัฐอเมริกาเป็นประเทศเอกราช
“…บางท่านอาจระลึกได้ว่า พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว พระราชมหัยยิกาของข้าพเจ้า ได้ทรงสื่อสารติดต่อกับ

race, traditions and beliefs, can live together freely and harmoniously. How these millions, scattered over a large territory, can agree upon major issues in the complicated affairs of this world. How, in short, they can tolerate each other at all.
“Secondly, I wish to bring to you, in person, the greetings and goodwill of my own people. Although Americans and Thais live on opposite sides of the globe there is one thing in common - their love of freedom. Indeed, the word “Thai” actually means free. The kind reception I am enjoying in this country enables me to take back to my people your friendship and goodwill. Friendship, of one government for another, is an important thing. But, friendship of one people for another assuredly guarantees peace and progress.
“Thirdly, I have the natural, human desire to see my birthplace. I expect some of you here were also born in Boston or, like my father, were educated at Harvard, hasten to congratulate such fortunate people. I am sure they are with me in spirit. We share a sentiment of deep pride in the academic and cultural achievements of that wonderful city.”
His Majesty then touched on American aid for Thailand, saying:
“…American assistance is to enable Thai people to achieve their objectives through their own efforts. I need hardly say that this concept has our complete endorsement. Indeed, there is a precept of the Lord Buddha that says ‘Thou art thine own refuge.’ We are grateful for American aid, but we intend, one day, to do without it.
“This leads me to a question in which some of you may be interested which is: What do we Thais think of United States cooperation? I shall try to explain my view as briefly as I can.
“In my country, there is one widely accepted concept: that of family obligations.The members of a family, in the larger sense, are expected to help one another whenever there is need for assistance. Giving of aid is merit in itself: the giver does not expect to hear others singing his praises every day; nor does he expect anything in return. The receiver is nevertheless grateful. He too, in his turn, will carry out his obligations.
“In giving generous assistance to foreign countries, the United States is, through my Thai eyes, applying the old concept of family obligations on the larger scale. The nations of the world are learning that they are but members of one big family; that they have obligations to one another; that they are closely interdependent. It may take a long time to learn this lesson but, when it has been truly learnt, the prospects of world peace will become brighter.”
His Majesty went on to remind U.S. congressmen of the smooth relationships enjoyed by both Thais and Americans from the early years of the United States of America’s nationhood.
“…Some of you may recall that my great-grandfather, King Mongkut, was in communication with President Buchanan during the years from 1859 to 1861 - 100 years ago.
“President Buchanan sent him a letter dated May 10,1859, with a consignment of books in 192 volumes. The king was very pleased with the books and, in a letter dated February 14, 1861, sent certain presents in return as gifts to the American people and an offer that became historic.

ประธานาธิบตีบัคคานัน ระหว่างปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๐๒ ถึง พ.ศ. ๒๔๐๔ เมื่อประมาณ ๑๐๐ ปีมาแล้ว ท่านประธานาธิบดีได้มีสาส์นลงวันที่ ๑๐ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๐๒ ไปถวายพร้อมด้วยหนังสือจำนวน ๑๙๒ เล่ม พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพอพระราชหฤทัยเป็นอย่างยิ่ง และในพระราชสาส์นลงวันที่ ๑๔ กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. ๒๔๐๔ ทรงมอบของขวัญมายังสหรัฐอเมริกันพร้อมด้วยข้อเสนอซึ่งกลายเป็นเรื่องสร้างประวัติศาสตร์
“ในยุคนั้น มีความต้องการใช้ช้างกันมากในประเทศไทยและประเทศเพื่อนบ้าน มีการส่งช้างไปยังซีลอน สุมาตรา และชวา ปล่อยให้หากินในป่าเพื่อขยายพันธุ์ ผลก็คือมีช้างจำนวนมากในประเทศแถบนั้น”
“ในอดีต ช้างมีความสำคัญอย่างยิ่ง ในแง่เศรษฐกิจแล้ว ช้างช่วยกิจการทำไม้ โดยชักลากซุงและวัตถุหนักต่าง ๆ เหมือนรถเเทรกเตอร์ในปัจจุบัน และโดยที่ช้างสามารถบุกไปในป่าดิบ จึงทำหน้าที่เป็นสัตว์พาหนะในการขนส่ง และจากขนาดมหึมาและกำลังมหาศาลของมัน ในยามสงครามช้างจะสร้างความสะดุ้งกลัวให้กับข้าศึก และโดยที่ช้างสามารลใช้ประโยชน์สำคัญและมีจำนวนมากในประเทศเรา พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวจึงได้ทรงยื่นข้อเสนอด้วยมิตรไมตรีที่จะจัดส่งช้างมาให้ประธานาธิบดีเเละรัฐสภาสหรัฐ เพื่อให้ปล่อยในที่รกร้างของสหรัฐเพื่อขยายพันธุ์ต่อไป
“ข้อเสนอดังกล่าวมิได้มีจุดมุ่งหมายใดมากกว่าการให้สิ่งที่เพื่อนยังขาดอยู่ ด้วยลักษณะเดียวกับที่โครงการความช่วยเหลือของอเมริกันกำเนิดขึ้น และด้วยความเข้าใจ และความเห็นคุณค่าของแนวทางนี้ รัฐบาลไทยจึงยินดีรับและรู้สึกซาบซึ้งในโครงการดังกล่าว
“ประเทศของเราทั้งสองมีความสัมพันธ์อันดียิ่งต่อกันตลอดมา เริ่มจากคณะสอนศาสนาของท่านที่นำผลประโยชน์ของการแพทย์ และความรู้วิทยาศาสตร์สมัยใหม่ ตามมาด้วยการสถาปนาความสัมพันธุ์เป็นทางการและสนธิสัญญาทางไมตรีระหว่างกัน สนธิสัญญาดังกล่าวมีขึ้นตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๖”
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวเเละสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ได้เสด็จเยือนนครนิวยอร์คที่ซึ่งมีการถวายการต้อนรับด้วยการโปรยแถบกระดาษสีลงมาจากตึก ตามประเพณีปฏิบัติของชาวนครนิวยอร์ค ในวันที่ ๕ กรกฏาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๓ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวเสด็จไปยังอาคารชุดของ นายเบนนี่ กู๊ดแมน เป็นการส่วนพระองค์ ทรงเข้าร่วมวงกับ เบนนี่ กู้ดแมน จีน ครูปา เทดดี้ วิลสัน เออร์บี้ กรีน โจนาห์ โจนส์ และ เรด นอร์โว นักดนตรีแจคผู้ยิ่งใหญ่เหล่านี้ใหhสมัญญาพระองค์ว่า “คูลแคท” หมายถึงผู้มีความสามารถและความมั่นใจในสิ่งที่ทำ และแถมท้ายว่า หากทรงมองหาอาชีพเเล้ว ขอให้ไปร่วมวงกับพวกเขาได้เสมอ
พระบาทสมเด็จ พระเจ้าอยู่หัวและสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ได้เสด็จไปเยือนสถานที่ประสูติของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวที่โรงพยาบาลเมาท์ออร์เบิร์น และได้พบนายแพทย์ ดับบลิว สจ๊วต วิทมอร์ แพทย์ผู้ถวายพระประสูติการ ทรงได้รับการถวายสมุดปกหนังขลิบทองบรรจุสำเนาสูติบัตร ทั้งยังได้ทรงพบกับนางพยาบาลทั้งสี่คนที่ถวายพระอภิบาลในครั้งนั้น
สหรัฐอเมริกา พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวเเละสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถเสด็จไปยังสหราชอาณาจักรสหพันธรัฐเยอรมนี ปอร์ตุเกส สวิตเซอร์แลนด์ เดนมาร์ค นอรเวย์ สวีเดน อิตาลี นครวาติกัน เบลเยี่ยม ฝรั่งเศส ลักเซมเบิร์ก เนเธอร์แลนด์ และสเปน
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวและสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถเสด็จกลับเมื่อวัน18 มกราคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๔ ในความปลาบปลื้มยินดีของประชาชน การเสด็จนิวัตพระนครครั้งนี้นับว่าเป็นเหตุการณ์สำคัญของชาติในปี ๒๕๐๕ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถเสด็จเยือนปากีสถาน มลายา นิวซีแลนด์ เเละออสเตรเลีย ในปีต่อมา เสด็จเยือนณี่ปุ่น ไต้หวัน และฟิลิปปินส์ ระหว่างวันที่ ๒๙ กันยายน ถึง ๕ ตุลาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๐ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวและสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถเสด็จเยือนสาธารณรัฐออสเตรีย เป็นการเสด็จเยือนที่ยังตราตรึงอยู่ในความทรงจำ โดยมีการนำเพลงพระราชนิพนธ์ไปบรรเลงโดยวงดุริยางค์แห่งออสเตรียตอนใต้ ในกรุงเวียนนา และในวันที่ ๕ ตุลาคม ทรงได้รับการถวายสมาชิกภาพกิตติมศักดิ์ของ

“At that period of time, there was a great demand for elephants in our country and neighboring countries. Elephants had been sent to Ceylon, Sumatra and Java and turned loose in the jungles to breed. The result is that elephants are plentiful in those countries
“In the past, the elephant had great potential. From an economic point of view, elephants could be used in the timber industry to haul big logs and other heavy material, as tractors do today. As they can go through thick jungle, they were also used as beasts of burden for transportation purposes. And, in view of their enormous size and strength, in times of war enemies found them awesome foes. Since elephants could be put to a variety of good uses, and since they were available in large numbers in our country, my great grandfather made a gesture of friendliness. He offered to send elephants to the President and Congress to be turned loose for breeding in the uncultivated lands of America.
“That offer was made with no other objective other than to provide a friend with something he lacked, in the same spirit in which the American aid program is likewise offered. And, understanding and appreciating the sentiment underlying your aid program, the Thai Government welcomes the program and is grateful for it.
“Our two countries have had the best of relationships. They started with the coming of your missionaries who shared with our people the benefits of modern medicine and the knowledge of modern science. This soon led to official relations and to a treaty between the two nations. That treaty dates back to 1833.”
King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit were also in New York City where they were given a traditional parade and ticker-tape welcome. On July 5, 1960 His Majesty made a private visit to the apartment of Benny Goodman and got into a jazz session with Goodman, Gene Krupa, Teddy Wilson, Urbie Green, Jonah Jones and Red Norvo. These jazz “legends” called His Majesty a “cool cat” and said that he could join their bands if ever he needed a job!
Their Majesties went on to visit the King’s birthplace at Mount Auburn Hospital’, and met Dr. Stewart Whittemore who delivered him into the world. His Majesty was presented with a gold-worked, leather-bound book, which contained a certified copy of his birth certificate signed by Dr. Whittemore. The King also met the four nurses who cared for him at birth.
From the United States of America, the King and Queen went on to the United Kingdom, the Federal Republic of Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Italy, the Vatican City, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Spain.
They arrived back home on January 18, 1961 to a tumultuous welcome from the Thai people. Their return remains a momentous event in the life of the nation.
In 1962, Their Majesties paid a state visit to Pakistan, Malaya, New Zealand and Australia. Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines were on the royal schedule in 1963.
Between September 29 and October 5, 1964, the King and Queen made a memorable state visit to Austria, where His Majesty’s musical compositions were performed by the Nieder Osterreich Tonkustler

Orchestra in the Vienna Concert Hall. On the final day, His Majesty was accorded honorary membership of Vienna’s Academy of Arts and Music; the first Asian and only the 21st honorary member.
Later, Their Majesties made official visits to the Federal Republic of Germany from August 22 to 28, 1966, and Austria again from September 29 to October 2, 1966.
During a state visit to Iran, from April 23 to 30, 1967, the King and Queen celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary on April 28.
Official visits were made, again, to the United States in June 1967 with functions in Hawaii, New York and Massachusetts. The royal couple proceeded, on June 22, 1967, to visit EXPO ‘67 in Montreal, Canada, followed by a visit to Washington D.C. on June 27.

Seventy three years ago this month, Mohm Luang Bua Saritwongsa gave birth to a baby girl. The day was August 12th, and the child came to be known as Mohm Rajawongse Sirikit; named by her father, General HRH Prince Nakkhatra Manggala Kittiyakara Krommamuen Chandaburi Suranath upon the recommendation of HM King Prajadipok (Rama VII).

Any Thai will proudly tell you that the above paragraph refers to the birth of their beloved queen, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.

Visitors to the country, however, may be unaware of the depth of feeling for Her Majesty by her loyal subjects. Many tourists have asked why August the twelfth is a public holiday, and are pleasantly surprised to hear that not only it is the Queen’s birthday, but it is also celebrated as Mother’s Day, Her Majesty being the mother of the nation.

Queen Sirikit’s story, therefore will, we are sure, be of great interest to the many foreign visitors who come to our country throughout each year.

As a child, Mohm Rajawongse was sent to kindergarten at the Rajini school, before attending St Francis Xavier Convent school in Bangkok for her secondary education. Her father, then a prominent member of the Thai Diplomatic Corps, was posted to London where he took up his appointment to the Court of St James as Thailand’s Ambassador to Britain. The family joined him in London and thereafter on successive postings to Copenhagen and to Paris.

While staying in the French capital, Mohm Rajawongse met and befriended a young man who had become a regular visitor to the Thai Embassy in the city during breaks from his university studies in Switzerland. The young man was King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the uncrowned King of Thailand. His Majesty’s coronation had been postponed, allowing him to complete his academic studies.The young couple became good friends, and agreed to see as much of one another as possible during the King’s visits to Paris.

Shortly after his return to Lausanne from one such visit, however, came the terrible news that King Bhumibol had been seriously injured in a car accident in Switzerland. Upon hearing the news, Mohm Rajawongse Sirikit, along with her mother, flew to Lausanne in a bid to comfort her dearest friend, who had been hospitalized and was facing a long convalescence. During the course of the King’s recovery from his injuries, Mohm Rajawongse Sirikit became a regular commuter between Paris and Lausanne, where she offered comfort and support to the young King during his recovery. In the course of such visits, friendship turned to love, and the announcement of their engagement was made on July the 19th 1949.

The people of Thailand, still reeling from the news of their King’s involvement in a car accident in far off Switzerland, rejoiced when they heard of his intention to return home with a young lady who was destined to be their Queen.The 28th of April was chosen as the royal wedding day, and the nation came to a standstill as the young couple were married with all the pomp and ceremony of a royal wedding in the Srapatum Palace. The people of Thailand had but a week to get over the nationwide festivities, when on the fifth of May they were called upon to celebrate the coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol, and the elevation of his young wife, Mohm Rajawongse, to that of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.

Since those heady days when a nation fell in love with the young Queen Sirikit, Her Majesty has earned the loyalty and respect of an entire nation. Devoted to her husband, the King, their children, and to a life of public service, the Queen has performed her Royal duties with unparalleled grace and dignity.

Those duties have ranged from accompanying the King on official visits abroad, to listening to the plight of a young and impoverished mother in some rural hamlet. Indeed, the year 1969 marked the establishment of the Royal Project in the north of Thailand as originated from His Majesty’s private study on the devastation of soil erosion that was caused by “slash & burn” agriculture. The King has mapped out and planned the multitude of projects he has since implemented in the country. The Royal Projects have pursued their missions in collaboration with the King’s Chaipattana Foundation, Royal Thai Government, foreign governments, universities, public and private agencies and volunteers. Throughout 35 years there have been about 2,800 projects that His Majesty originated and initiated in the areas of farming and agriculture, home industries, rural development, hilltribes, living improvement, environment, and self-sufficiency programs. The royal couple have travelled throughout the country.

Her Majesty has been a beacon of hope and encouragement to the underprivileged in the nation, with particular emphasis on women’s rights and needs. She gives freely of her time and personal finance to the launching of cottage industries, such as spinning, weaving and dying of cotton, or basketry, traditionally carried out by the women of rural villages.

Due to His Majesty’s busy functions and health precaution, Her Majesty alone or with her children have carried out other new projects. Altogether between 1982-2004, it is about 348 projects that have spreaded out through the central, north, north east, and south regions.

During the last 6 years, Her Majesty granted an initiative to set up an experimental project to prove that after the people received training and possessed an awareness for preserving the forest and environment, it would then be possible for them to live harmoniously and interdependently with the forest without harming any of the natural resources. These hilltribe people would eventually gain educational training, cultivable land and overcome poverty. This is the philosophy of “A Little Home in the Big Forest”, i.e. a self-help community has been developed to gain sufficiency of foods - grain, plant, vegetable, fruits, farming animals, fish, herbs, and spices. This program eventually become a “Food Bank” project.

Her heartfelt concern for those affected by HIV AIDS has been unreservedly expressed in public, as has her desire to see every child, regardless of family income, receive a proper education. Her Majesty has also worked tirelessly to assist those involved in the conservation of the environment, and a seemingly endless list of organizations and associations in a variety of fields have benefited from the Queen’s patronage.

Although divorced from the public business of politics, Her Majesty has refused to hide behind tradition when the very lives of Thai people are at risk. And so it was that she voiced her concern, during a 45 minute televised address, over the unrest in the south of the country. Queen Sirikit was addressing politicians and community leaders at the Royal Palace, but the decision was taken to broadcast her words to the nation. Her Majesty urged people to help the government solve the problems in the south and to express disapproval at the injustice against innocent people.

Queen Sirikit’s devotion to all Thais is reflected in the love the people of this nation have for their Queen.
