Nan Youth Development Association

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

My friends in Nan have established The Nan Youth Development Association…To educate, develop, help and protect the children of Nan Province, northern Thailand…So they can achieve a more fulfilling and productive life…They are building an education and activity centre in the main provincial town of Nan, where the girls and boys can enjoy learning, games and relaxation time…The centre includes a dining room, activity areas, classrooms, and a lake for fishing, boating and swimming…It will be an open place…Welcoming visitors and helpers at any time…To provide the children with opportunities to meet others…

Many western individuals and families help them in their work to expand the lives of Nan’s youngsters…You can do so yourself…By contributing to the future of these northern Thailand children…

Nan Night Life

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

You will be surprised to learn that Nan is…Alive with Entertainment after dark…Which is not obvious if you walk the deserted streets after 9 pm…

Starting at 6.00 pm the fit and energetic people…Do aerobics for 30 minutes…Under the main bridge across the Nan river…I tried it once and only lasted for 15 minutes…Then went for a beer to recover…

My friend Alex speaks English & owns the Duenphen Home Full Moon Restaurant with excellent Thai food cooked just the way you want it…You can bring your own bottle of spirits and only pay for the ice and mixers…There’s a menu in Thai & English…
Alex’s family also own the Baan Thai Restaurants in Sheffield and Burton-upon-Trent and the Tarn Thai Restaurant in Nottingham, England…

Just look at the prices for Thai food in UK…
Here in Nan…At Alex’s restaurant the prices are 10% of those on the menu in Burton-upon-Trent…Now you can Escape to Thailand and enjoy great Thai food with us all in Nan…

Another friend Mr Noi owns Phusom Restaurant which is the only Cowboy Bar in Nan…His Father opened it in 1968…It is full of Indian saddles, bridles, revolvers, stirrups…Everything to do with Cowboys & Horses…It’s a great place to visit close to the river…He also subscribes to the international magazine Cowboys & Indians…Which I enjoy reading…

On the Nan Riverside…Near the police station…There are several open air restaurants serving excellent food at bargain prices from 5 pm till late…These are opposite my friend Chai’s Nan Riverside Bar…Which is a great place to visit and make new Thai friends…Chai speaks English and will make you most welcome…

Walking to the right down the riverside marble promenade is the Verachon Riverside Bar and Restaurant…This is a great place to visit after 10 pm with an excellent live band playing great music until 1 am…I often act a bit crazy in here and do my Thai style dancing…Much to everyone’s support and amusement…They laugh even more when I fall over…

If you enjoy Karaoke visit The Mask Complex Pub, Restaurant and Karaoke which has a large central room with a big screen projector TV plus 5 VIP rooms with a normal size TV and 5 Special VIP rooms with a projector TV…These rooms cost Baht 100 (US$ 2.50) an hour for the VIP rooms and Baht 200 an hour for the Special VIP rooms…

Next door to The Mask Complex is Channel X Discotheque…This is very busy and full of local Thais having a great time…A live band also plays here at weekends and holidays. It is best to take your own bottle of spirits to Channel X and only pay for the ice and mixers as the beer is rather expensive at over baht 100 a bottle…
Channel X reminds me of a 1960’s style disco in UK and I enjoy going there and doing my Thai style dancing…
The Mask Complex and Channel X close at 2 am…

These are just a selection of the Night Life in Nan…There is much more to discover…I look forward to seeing you all in Nan and don’t forget to bring me a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label as a gift…Many thanks!

Thai Fishing Lakes

Monday, December 12th, 2005

Escape to Thailand and Go Fishing…There are Fishing Lakes everywhere in Thailand. Here in Nan, there are four and the best one is at Earth World, which is 6 kms from the centre of town in lovely peaceful countryside 3 kms north of the airport…

There are 9 salas beside the lake and it costs Baht 40 (US$ 1) per person for the fishing, from 10 am to 6 pm. The staff will serve you with food and drinks and you can buy fishing bait at Baht 20 a bag. When you catch a fish you must put it back in the lake…

I go there with my friends and we catch a lot of fish, eat food, drink beers and have a great time. The fish are about 3 kilos, though the Thais joke they have caught a 20 kilo fish there…

Other Fishing Lakes allow you to take fish home and let you have your first fish free as part of the entry fee, then charge you Baht 35 a kilo for fish you don’t put back in the lake…

For more ideas for fishing in Thailand, there is Fishing Adventures, which is a truly unique fishing tour agency, offering daily or weekly programs that are adventurous but still offer the relaxed spirit of a holiday…
